Art Explorers Program

Explore your landscape through art!

Art Explorers is a special photography, printing and hiking program designed for youth. Youth ages 12-18 and their families are invited to learn basic photography techniques within the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Participants may bring their own camera or phone and will learn to capture angles, textures and spaces and, using solar dye, will print their photos on fabric at the Las Cruces Museum of Art.

Youth are invited to participate in all or any of the weekend’s activities:

Thursday, June 15 (8:00am): hike at Soledad Canyon
Friday, June 16 (8:00am): hike at Aguirre Springs

*Transportation from the museum will be provided for the first 11 registered youth, leaving at 8:00am. Youth and their families are invited to meet at the trailhead at each location at 8:30am for an introduction. Bring hats, snacks, sun screen, cameras.

Saturday, June 17 10am – 2pm: workshop at Las Cruces Museum of Art

Participants make film negatives to print on fabric and other craft materials to create individual take-home artworks that reflect their unique experiences in the OMDP. Artist Faith Purvey will talk about her work at 3pm, following the workshop.

This event is facilitated by Faith Purvey, Los-Angeles based artist, Shaunna Foster, hiking guide for the City of Las Cruces, and volunteers from Friends of Organ Mountains for “Art Explorers” with support from the Las Cruces Museum of Art, the City of Las Cruces, and the Friends of the Organ Mountains.
