DESCRIPTION:Join the Sierra Club on an Earth Day hike.  \nBLM archeologist \, Garrett\, will lead a hike to La Cueva. Meet us at the Group Site/Picnic Pavillion of La Cueva. Garrett will begin the hike at Arroyo Trailhead\, next to the water tap and the bathrooms. \nThe hike will be on established trails\, is about 1 1/4 miles total\ndistance with an elevation gain of about 200 ft.\nBring a bag lunch and enjoy a picnic at the Pavilion when you\nreturn. \n  \nThe Sierra Club will provide cookies and water. \n  \nLa Cueva Picnic Area:\nDirections\nTake Dripping Springs Road toward the Visitor Center. Watch for\na turnoff to the LEFT about 1.7 miles PAST the Baylor Canyon\nturnoff. There is a small brown BLM sign which marks the turnoff.\nProceed slowly. Fee stop ahead. I Follow the Loop past the individual\npicnic sites\, and you will come to the Group/Pavilion site on your\nright.

Learn about the National Monument\, the geology of Picacho Peak and the southern Rio Grande Valley\, and the historic Butterfield Overland Trail which passed nearby. This hike is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Part 1 emphasizes area geology. Part 2 emphasizes the history of the Butterfield Overland Trail. \nTrail Conditions & Gear:\nThis hike is rated moderate due to some rocky and sandy terrain\, uneven ground\, and a few short inclines and descents. Hiking poles and comfortable hiking shoes or boots will be helpful and hikers should bring at least 1 liter of water. No water or restrooms will be available on this hike. Remember to dress for the weather and check weather conditions before the hike. \nDriving Directions:\nTake US Highway 70 west from Las Cruces to Picacho Hills. DESCRIPTION:Volcanoes & Trail Dust\, Part 1\nDate & Time: Saturday\, February 24\, 2024\, 9 am\nLocation: Picacho Peak Recreation Area\, Las Cruces\, NM\nDuration: 3.5 to 4 hours\nTotal Distance: About 3.5 miles. Our guides will make frequent stops along the way. \nEver wondered about that volcano in our backyard or what the “Butterfield Trail” was? Join us for a scenic\, guided hike in the Picacho Peak Recreation Area of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Learn about the National Monument\, the geology of Picacho Peak and the southern Rio Grande Valley\, and the historic Butterfield Overland Trail which passed nearby. This hike is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Part 1 emphasizes area geology. Part 2 emphasizes the history of the Butterfield Overland Trail. \nTrail Conditions & Gear:\nThis hike is rated moderate due to some rocky and sandy terrain\, uneven ground\, and a few short inclines and descents. Hiking poles and comfortable hiking shoes or boots will be helpful and hikers should bring at least 1 liter of water. No water or restrooms will be available on this hike. Remember to dress for the weather and check weather conditions before the hike. \nDriving Directions:\nTake US Highway 70 west from Las Cruces to Picacho Hills. Turn north on Picacho Hills Drive and after 1 mile continue west on Barcelona Ridge Road. Travel 1 mile west and turn north on Anthem Road. Follow Anthem Road for 1 mile to its end. Turn north on Picacho Mountain Loop Road (unpaved) and follow this for 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking area. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended due to some rough and sandy areas in the unpaved road.

You must register in order to attend! \nWe would appreciate it if you need to cancel to please do so or email us directly at jessica@organmtnfriends.org so that we can quickly fill that spot. \n  \nMORE INFO \nTake the Mesquite exit off of I-10 and head east on County Road 8059. When you cross Las Alturas Drive (the east side frontage road to I-10)\, stay on County Road 8059 heading east until you see the parking lot and cars at the Sierra Vista Trailhead a few miles up the road. We’ll start the hike there at 1:00 PM. Our guide will be driving an Orange Ford Escape \nDifficult level trail \nWill take roughly 3 hours to allow our guide plenty of time. \n  \nRECOMMENDED GEAR: \nTrekking poles and rugged hiking footwear are recommended.
