Volcanoes & Trail Dust, Part 1

Join us in commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument designation! Together with our partners from our local Bureau of Land Management, we have organized a month-long series of events to mark this significant occasion.

Date & Time: Saturday, May 11, 2024, 7:30 am
Location: Picacho Peak Recreation Area, Las Cruces, NM
Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours
Total Distance: About 3.5 miles. Our guides will make frequent stops along the way.

Ever wondered about that volcano in our backyard or what the “Butterfield Trail” was? Join us for a scenic, guided hike in the Picacho Peak Recreation area of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and learn about the national monument, the geology of our area and the historic Butterfield Overland Trail.

Trail Conditions & Gear:
This hike is rated moderate due to some rocky and sandy terrain, uneven ground, and a few short inclines and descents. Hiking poles and comfortable hiking shoes or boots will be helpful and hikers should bring at least 1 liter of water. No water or restrooms will be available on this hike. Remember to dress for the weather and check weather conditions before the hike.

Driving Directions:
Take US Highway 70 west from Las Cruces to Picacho Hills. Turn north on Picacho Hills Drive and after 1 mile continue west on Barcelona Ridge Road. Travel 1 mile west and turn north on Anthem Road. Follow Anthem Road for 1 mile to its end. Turn north on Picacho Mountain Loop Road (unpaved) and follow this for 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking area. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended due to some rough and sandy areas in the unpaved road.
