Position Overview
Friends of the Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks is seeking a motivated, community-centered individual for an exciting new position: Outdoor Education Leader. This full-time, entry-level role reports to the Youth Programs Coordinator and plays a key part in implementing and expanding our Moving Montañas youth programming.
The Outdoor Education Leader will assist with program delivery, cultivate relationships with community partners, and help strategically expand our youth programming alongside the Youth Programs Coordinator and Executive Director.
This position requires flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct outdoor education activities, including hikes, lessons, and outdoor recreation with youth.
- Plan and implement Moving Montañas programming in schools and community settings.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with partners, schools, and community members.
- Collaborate with staff to coordinate logistics, outreach, and program evaluation.
- Support the continued growth and improvement of youth programming across Southern New Mexico.
Priority Qualifications
- Commitment to social justice and equitable access to the outdoors.
- Strong desire to work with community youth and foster inclusive learning environments.
- Knowledge and appreciation of public lands and outdoor activities.
- Experience leading youth programs or outdoor activities (strongly preferred).
- Bilingual in Spanish (written and spoken).
- Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Self-motivated, patient, and collaborative—with a good sense of humor!
Secondary Qualifications
- Experience in education, nonprofit, or community-based work.
- Experience developing education or outreach programs.
- Familiarity with nonprofit technology, communications, or administrative systems.
- Ability to manage workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to ride a bike and able to lead bike-based activities.
Additional Information
- Special Requirements: Periodic travel within Las Cruces, New Mexico; flexible hours including some evenings and weekends; valid driver’s license required.
- Physical Demands: Ability to walk long distances, bend, climb stairs, and lift/carry up to 35 pounds.
- Funding: This position is currently funded for one year, with continuation dependent on future funding.
